It's hard to believe, but the only difference between a standard projector and an interactive projector is the technology. The typical projector that you'll find today has two basic components. Projection hardware is in the form of a small lightweight box with a screen and a ballast which are usually powered by a standard battery. Inside the projector there's a computer and a few other electronic components which are wired together. An interactive projector has two primary components - the light source (or projector itself) plus the special camera and lens combination, which allow the projection display to see everything perfectly. A thin layer of plastic on the front of the unit usually blocks the infrared light from penetrating the screen. Once this plastic is installed the screen is ready for interaction with a wide range of different materials. Touchscreens are becoming increasingly popular in schools and businesses, and the result is that it is possible to deliver interactive content that includes not only text but videos and PowerPoint presentations. The best systems combine the LCD monitor with a special camera called a "glove" that has a very sensitive surface that allows the user to manipulate the displayed images with just a touch of the finger. Special optical technology helps to reduce eye strain on the part of the user.

Since many classrooms have student seating in close proximity to computer stations, many educators are also finding that the perfect solution for teaching is an interactive whiteboard or interactive projector. Interactive whiteboards come in a variety of sizes. There are many smaller models available that are great for small classrooms where each student must be kept busy with his or her own project. Other larger models provide the ability to project larger pictures onto large classroom screens. The larger models are perfect for larger classrooms that are also equipped with VGA video connections.

There are two options for providing classroom instruction: either a traditional pen-based method or the use of an electronic system that projects not only text but also images on a wide screen. Both options provide a great way for teachers to teach students visually, but there are advantages and disadvantages to each choice. While the use of an interactive projector for classroom instruction is an excellent choice, it can be expensive to buy. It can also take some time and training to get used to using touch screens, especially in comparison with traditional pen-based methods.
